“Not only a spirited story, but a very carefully drawn picture of the age of chivalry.” — The Outlook, 24 November 1906

Before he became a legend, he had to become a knight.

England, 1349. The Black Death has passed across the land, old fortunes have fallen, and beyond the Channel the long war with France waits to begin again.

Nigel Loring is the young heir of an ancient fighting family: poor in possessions, rich in lineage and determined that the honour of his fathers shall not end with him. When he enters the service of the great Sir John Chandos and the court of Edward III, the world he has long desired finally opens before him.

Before leaving England, Nigel swears to accomplish three deeds worthy of the woman he loves.

His road leads through the martial world of the Hundred Years’ War: royal courts and outlaw roads, sea battle and siege, Brittany and France, English archers and armoured men-at-arms, Edward III, the Black Prince and the captains whose names passed into military history.

Written as the prequel to The White Company, Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sir Nigel was one of the historical novels of which its author was most proud. Doyle researched the age extensively and deliberately refused to soften its contradictions: the splendour of chivalry stands beside physical hardship, private violence and the terrible intimacy of medieval war.
