“Highly interesting adventure of a sort to stir the pulse and arouse the wonder of even the jaded novel reader.” — The New York Times, 1912

There are places upon the earth where time has not passed.

When Professor George Edward Challenger returns from the unexplored interior of South America with an impossible claim, London answers him with ridicule. Beyond the known rivers and forests, he declares, rises an immense and inaccessible plateau—a world cut off from mankind, where forms of life thought extinct for millions of years may still endure.

To prove it, Challenger leads a small expedition into the wilderness: the sceptical Professor Summerlee, the celebrated hunter and traveller Lord John Roxton, and the young journalist Edward Malone, who has gone in search of an adventure worthy of courage.

Upon that lost tableland, the certainties of the modern world fall away. Primeval forests conceal monstrous life; ancient struggles continue beneath an unknown sky; and four men of the twentieth century discover how thin the dominion of civilization becomes when confronted with an earth that has forgotten mankind.

First published in 1912, Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World remains one of the great adventure novels of the modern age—a tale of discovery, danger, scientific audacity and the terrible grandeur of the unknown.
