Inside the edition

About this book.

In 1760 Canada fell, and the flag of France came down over the forts of the Great Lakes. Britain had won the interior of North America. The nations of the forest had not been asked.

Within three years the war belts were moving from village to village. Pontiac, war chief of the Ottawas, became the leading spirit of a design that drew in the tribes of the Lakes and the Ohio: to strike the British posts beyond the mountains at once, and to break the chain before help could come.

The forts fell one after another. Detroit was besieged. The frontiers of Pennsylvania and Virginia burned, and Highlanders and Royal Americans marched into the forest toward Bushy Run.

Francis Parkman gathered some 3,400 manuscript pages from the archives of London, Paris and the American states, walked the ground and collected the traditions of the old French families of Detroit. Unable for three years to read or write, he dictated the narrative. It was his first history, published in Boston in 1851, and the opening of a lifelong work on the struggle for North America.

This edition presents Parkman’s text of 1851 entire, with his notes and appendices.
