“His operations were distinguished by the most indomitable spirit of valour, endurance, and devotedness to his country’s honour.” — Sir Robert Peel, House of Commons, 20 February 1843

In the winter of 1841, the British position in Afghanistan was collapsing.

While revolt engulfed Kabul and the mountain passes turned against the occupying army, Major-General Sir Robert Sale fought his brigade eastward through the Ghilzai country and entered the half-ruined fortress of Jellalabad.

There, with roughly two thousand British and Indian troops, he made his stand.

The walls were broken. Supplies were short. Communications with India were uncertain. Then came the destruction of the Kabul army, the arrival of the wounded Dr William Brydon, and an earthquake that struck the fortifications themselves.

Still the garrison held.

George Robert Gleig — soldier, military historian and later Chaplain-General to the Forces — reconstructed the campaign from officers’ manuscript journals, the Orderly Books of the 13th and testimony from men connected with the operations. Published by John Murray in 1846, Sale’s Brigade in Afghanistan preserves one of the defining episodes of the First Afghan War.

Amid one of the Empire’s gravest disasters, Jellalabad became a name of honour.
