Life and work
Warren Hastings Miller
c. 1876–1960
The camp as a problem in practical design.
Miller approaches a camp through its working parts: tent, bed, cooking outfit and the load that carries them. Comfort is something to plan and build. The woods test whether the design succeeds.

Life and work
A life in context
Camp Craft appeared in 1915, between Murray’s earlier invitation to outdoor recreation and Kephart’s expanded two-volume handbook. Seton’s introduction gives this particular book a documented connection to the Woodcraft world.

Origins and early years
Warren Hastings Miller wrote under the name Warren H. Miller. His birth year is reported inconsistently; c. 1876 is used here rather than presenting a disputed date as exact. He died in 1960.
The course of a life
The title page of Camp Craft identifies him as editor of Field and Stream. His writing ranged from outdoor instruction to adventure stories for young readers.
The literary work
Camp Craft: Modern Practice and Equipment was published in New York by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1915, with an introduction by Ernest Thompson Seton. Its emphasis falls on the arrangements that make a camp work.
Beside Beard’s interest in building and Kephart’s attention to traveling light, Miller offers another way of thinking through tools and materials. Their shared subject does not by itself establish a personal relationship.
The legacy
The durable question in Miller’s work is how equipment serves a person in a particular place. That question remains useful whenever a camper chooses what to carry, what to improvise and what to leave behind.
