Life and work
Horace Sowers Kephart
1862–1931
A librarian’s exactness, carried into the mountain camp.
A pack must be carried, a fire kept going, a night passed in the rain. Kephart brought such ordinary difficulties to the center of outdoor writing. His wilderness was a place to understand through practice.

Life and work
A life in context
Between Murray’s invitation to the Adirondacks in 1869 and the expanded Camping and Woodcraft of 1916–17, the camping book became a store of tested methods. Kephart stands at that practical end of the tradition.
Explore the life and work
Origins and early years
Born in Pennsylvania in 1862, Horace Sowers Kephart built a career in libraries before making his name as an outdoor writer. He directed the Mercantile Library in St. Louis from 1890 to 1903.
The course of a life
In 1904 he moved to western North Carolina. Camping, writing and close attention to mountain life became the basis of a second career. He later campaigned for a Great Smoky Mountains National Park; his death in a car accident in 1931 came before the park opened.
The literary work
The Book of Camping and Woodcraft appeared in 1906. Its expanded successor divided the subject between Camping and Woodcraft in 1916–17. Beside these handbooks, Our Southern Highlanders, published in 1913, examined the people and life of the region he had adopted.
The strength of the manual lies in the connection between small decisions: what goes into a pack changes the journey, and the journey determines the camp. Read beside Miller and Beard, Kephart makes outdoor skill a matter of judgment as well as equipment.
The legacy
Readers still return to Kephart for the habits behind the equipment: preparing carefully, observing conditions and learning by use. Historical camping keeps part of that practical world alive even where materials have changed.
