The edition

Inside the edition
Edited by Lady MacGregor. First published by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, 1888.
The second volume records MacGregor's mature career as military explorer, commander and strategist, including his travels through Persia, Khorassan and Balochistan, his service in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, the march to Kandahar and his work as Quartermaster-General in India.
Drawing upon journals, memoranda and military correspondence selected by his widow, the historical work reveals the growth of a professional intelligence system and the strategic concerns which culminated in his confidential study The Defence of India in 1884.
The AETERNUS edition adds new studies of the Anglo-Russian Great Game, the military geography of Afghanistan, the organisation of intelligence, the suppression and subsequent Russian translation of MacGregor's strategic study, and the independent publication of his Afghan diary by William Trousdale in 1985.
